Persian Rugs You Should Have Bought Months Ago

You’ve  known you need area rugs for a long time. When you first moved in it was one of those things that you thought you’d get immediately but when you didn’t you put it off and convinced yourself that it was even better without them. Why cover the wood floors, you thought. But now it’s time.

The winter came and went and you felt the barrenness. You could have easily used the color and warmth, the texture and pleasure of walking barefoot comfortably. So now you begin shopping. And because you’re probably going to be in this home for awhile, it’s a good idea to invest in hand knotted area rugs you can be proud of.

Persian rugs are the finest. Silk is more expensive than Persian wool rugs. There are many designs and colors from which to choose, thus you should consider your interior decor and match it with your future Persian rugs.

When you choose which Persian rugs are right, you will remember your initial hesitation to buy as laziness. And through the seasons you will remember you purchase as the right thing to do and feel that your home is cozier, more natural and more properly adorned.

How Luxurious Area Rugs = Confidence

The little things can make a big difference in your world. Nice things like silk Persian rugs can take your home from the same old traditional couch and coffee table kind of entertainment area to a fire-burning, rows of library books, pipe-smoking kind of luxurious suite. And it almost happens overnight, even if you don’t have a library with a  rolling ladder.

When you invest in area rugs you’re making a commitment to your home. You want to allow yourself a certain level of luxury and refinement. Area rugs are an ideal way to achieve that. These aspects of luxury are important to the way you live. If you can’t feel good about your living quarters, you probably can’t feel good about yourself. On the other hand, if you’re proud to come home and invite guests over, this will translate into greater confidence.

Textures are often unnoticed consciously, but that doesn’t mean your unconscious ignores the iridescent light that bounces off your silk Persian rugs. These details are important to creating an impression of splendor and quality. Your furniture will be buoyed by the fine materials and the confidence you have in your home and yourself will too. So go ahead and invest today!

Persian Wool Rugs vs. Silk Persian Rugs

Which rug styles are the best I wondered as I browsed the rug shop? There are Persian wool rugs, silk Persian rugs and other Oriental rugs for sale.

Persian wool rugs are less shiny than silk. They are more practical because they are hardier and less about aesthetics due to the lack of sheen. Silk rugs should not get heavy foot traffic because they can wear and lose their luster.

After learning this I decided that it would behoove me to have one of each. Since I like to think of myself as a connoisseur, that is, a purveyor of the fine, good and beautiful, it seemed the right choice to choose one of the silk Persian rugs, perhaps to have in my library or maybe even to display on a wall.

But because I am also a rugged man, a man who understands the importance of getting his hands dirty, it seemed that Persian wool rugs are the choice for everyday use. The splash of color and proprietary warmth that comes from these area rugs is too pleasing to hide in an obscure corner of my home. And with that settled, I walked away with two fine, different rug styles.

Hand Knotted Rugs For Your Handcrafted Home

Your home is so very important to you. Whether you live in a palatial mansion or a closet-like big city apartment, your space helps define you. You spend a lot of time finding just the right artfully decorative accessories and furniture that suits you and the space. You hand pick the things that matter to you and seem charming because you want your space to be yours.

With a hand knotted rug you can give the smallest or largest space a bit of handcrafted charm that will sync up perfectly with the more “lived in” particular choices you have made. It can really tie a room together or if spread through out your home it can tie the whole place together.

Knowing that these rugs are knotted by hand is incredibly special. To be able to notice and appreciate all of the work that actual people put into making these rugs is just astounding. It is rare these days that you have any connection to the goods in your home. These rugs can also find their way into hallways, bathrooms, and kitchenettes as hand knotted area rugs.

We have so many things that are built by robots and machines these days. It is nice to think about someone somewhere actually making a thing as beautiful as a rug.

Area Rugs Made With Care

So much of what we have in our homes is mass produced. Our furniture and appliances, the food many of us eat, our reading materials and clothing, it has all been made in huge factories by machines. It seems like our society just doesn’t have room for hand crafted goods anymore. Sad to think about all of the work that used to be done by hand just disappearing. All those years of humans developing skillful ways to craft tools, furniture, clothing, could be lost to time.

All this advancement makes the easy availability of handknotted area rugs all the more special and surprising. Crafting gorgeous Persian rugs from hand is tradition and it is an art form but it is also super easy to take home.  Handcrafted rugs are available at most online rug shops. In fact our friends over at 1 800 Get A Rug have a  fantastic selection.

I love to stand on my hand knotted rugs and think about the life of the people who made them. I consider what it was like developing the skills required to knot an area rug that can fill up a dinning room. I wonder where they learned and if knotting rugs is a family tradition. I wonder if I could do that.

The Ideal Rooms For Area Rugs

You know us here at this blog. We love area rugs. Honestly we would put area rugs anywhere. What room is the best for area rugs? Duh, every room! We would throw a few handknotted area rugs in the back yard if it was up to us. Bottom of the pool? Why not?!

Obviously all of that would be insane for people less obsessed with hand knotted rugs than we are. There are certain rooms though that benefit exponentially from the presence of an area rug. The dining room for example. Placing an area rug with the dining room table in the center can be a great way to tie a room together. It creates an awesome pattern that feels very comfy.

Bedrooms also have perfect spaces for area rugs. A smaller one for example in the space not occupied by your essential bedroom furniture(bed, dresser, etc.) is a great way to avoid walking on cold wood floors when running from the bed to the dresser. It can also really make a hallway more hospitable for bare feet.

There are rooms that are simply made for area rugs and then there are those in which you have to get creative. Why not start by slipping an area rug into one of these rooms, we’ll try and convince you of the pool one at a later date.

Online Rugs

Recently I have been a little off put by a lot of the places that you might find oriental rugs for sale. When I look at hand knotted area rugs, I want to admire the work and make decisions about what to purchase, but I do not need to be sold hard on the purchase. If I am going to purchase an area rug, I will know it.

That is why I have taken to doing online rug shopping. It is not that I don’t enjoy touching and smelling the rugs, but given the ability of the web to make commerce easy and less invasive, the trade off is clearly worth it.

I love shopping for everything online so it is no surprise that fine oriental rugs would be the same. The ease with which you can check sizes, colors and styles and the convenience of having the rug delivered to you can not be over stated. I enjoy shopping for area rugs on the web more than I have ever enjoyed shopping for them in the shop. Honestly since I began shopping on through this blog I have never purchased so many rugs. It’s been great for my home and at these great prices easy on my wallet.

The Assyrian Prince and His Area Rugs

In Assyria lived a prince in a castle surrounded by fertile green hills through which a river ran. Beasts walked in tandem and grazed in the pastures by the river. Inside his home were beautiful chambermaids and scientists who developed irrigation systems and musicians with lyres and harps and dancers for his entertainment. And he was reputed to have the finest hand knotted area rugs in the land.

In ancient times it was difficult to acquire area rugs. One had to be a man of great power and wealth. The prince, who claimed ownership to the fertile valley was very happy. Until one day when his friend, an older man who was also his tutor told him that there was much to see in the world. He said that there were even finer area rugs in nearby Lebanon.

The prince was aghast. He could not fathom that there were other places with area rugs as exquisite as his own. He required his old tutor to go with him on a journey to acquire new area rugs. So they left.

Years later, they returned with carts full of area rugs in tow. The prince had seen the world. But when he arrived home and laid his new area rugs next to his old ones, the old ones were still superior. He was dumbfounded.

Area Rugs Can Be For Catnaps

I remember as a child my father would come exhausted and lie on the area rugs for ten or fifteen minutes. He’d tell me to wake him up and I’d crawl on his belly, or through his snore, pick up an eyelid and watch his hazel eye roll backwards into the socket. He’d whisper still half-asleep, five more minutes, and I’d say “No Dad. Now!” I couldn’t understand why he liked to sleep on the silk Persian rugs.

Now I can. For one, it doesn’t matter where you sleep when you’re really tired. For two, sleeping on hand knotted area rugs ain’t half bad. When you walk into the living room and you feel silk fibers between your toes it makes you want to curl into a ball and close your eyes. For three, those rich colors envelop you and make you feel like you’re home. It’s like an oriental den. Kind of.

So now I’m really sleepy. I stayed out late last night, doing who knows what. First thing I do when I get home is take after the old man: lie down on the area rugs and hit the hay. I just wish I had someone to wake me up.
